RIBI have been contacted by Dr. J Dale who is
chairman of the Ardingly Old Jeshwang Association. This organisation aims at developing and improving the health
services in a very poor area of the Gambia.
Dr. Dale worked there as an epidemiologist for many years.
The aims
at present are to develop the health care facilities in Old Jeshwang village,
develop primary care in the surrounding area and develop disease surveillance
in the country – so important in the control of epidemics (a recent meningitis
epidemic affected 1300 and there was a high mortality) and to enhance skills in
the communities by participation in joint projects.
Out
Patient facilities and the provision of antenatal and child health care has
been developed and is running now. The
second phase involves construction of a purpose built health centre and there
is a shortfall of £30,000. Help is
needed funding of individual rooms and equipping them and costs would vary from
around £1000 to £10,000.
The
disease surveillance unit needs help with computers and equipment and the
projected costs are around £1500. Any
help would be welcomed. Dr. Dale and
his wife are both prepared to come to speak to clubs if anyone is
interested. If you want further
information please contact Dr. Dale.
His contact is Dr. J W Dale, The Mount, Little London, Ardingly,
Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH17 6TJ. Tel 01444 892252. Fax 01444 892974.

This
information follows a recent e –mail sent to you
“On 21 May
this year, a natural disaster in the form of a Hurricane struck Tristan da
Cunha with 120 mph winds and torrential rain, causing total loss of
communication, power cables down, destroying many homes altogether, taking
roofs off others, seriously damaging the hospital including the operating
theatre. Much structural damage done to the Community Hall, the fishing
factory, the school and the bell tower of the Church. Unfortunately many cattle
and sheep were literally lifted up and dropped into the sea.
Amazingly, no one was injured, but all local inhabitants have suffered flood damage
and lost personal possessions. True to
the indomitable community spirit of the people, they are all helping each other
to repair damage and restore community buildings. The British Government has
allocated £75,000 to help to rebuild the shattered island.
The Tristan da Cunha Disaster Fund has been set up
and contributions towards this fund are much needed and will be much
appreciated and can be paid in either of the ways detailed here:
1) Send a
cheque direct to Crown Agents Financial Services Limited (CAFSL),
as follows:
For the attention of Mrs. Linda Harris
Crown Agents Financial Services Ltd.
St Nicholas House, St Nicholas Road, Sutton. Surrey.
Please include a note referring to the Tristan Disaster Fund.
2) Make a
bank transfer to CAFSL, by CHAPS or BACS Bank: Bank of England
Sort Code 10-11-11 for CHAPS or 10-00-00 for BACS
Account name: Crown Agents Financial Services Ltd.
Account Number 52030008
Reference: Tristan Disaster Relief Fund a/c 33871001
Should you require further information contact

Correspondence
has been received from Ockenden International about the plans it has to develop
a programme in Northern Uganda to help children (many of whom are AIDS
orphans). The programme is aimed at
young people and will train them in wider survival life skills, training in
life skills especially with reference to AIDS/HIV and identify, procure and
distribute approved material on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.
Details re
Christmas cards and an Update newsletter.
If anyone would like more information please contact me.
A request
to all District asking to keep RIBI aware of our International Service Activities. So if you have any projects for which you
are proud please let me have brief outline details. The benefits or giving this
information will make our efforts much more effective.
Good luck
in the year ahead as we try to show that “Mankind
is our Business”.
