Rejoicing as the School Aid's container is opened in Vila Malinga in Mozambique: Many of the items sent in the container were donated by Rotary and Inner Wheel. In their 'thank you' letter to Chris Knight, they say:....It was just too unbelievable!  Once we started carrying out all the desks and benches, the excitement was just too much for the children, and they quickly asked if they could also help carry the small chairs! ...We had the honour of having two Chiefs attend the ceremony....  It was too precious for words when the elderly Chief told the children that he would arrange a meeting with the parents to enforce regulations how the desks and chairs must be cared for.... We love and appreciate you very much for arranging this ‘once in a lifetime’ gift for Vila. Meirion Morris (pronounced as M-EYE-REE-ON),the DG for Dist 1260 from July 2005, addressed the  District Assembly on 12 May 05.

From the International point of view, the RIBI / District preferred project is Mercy Ships. Other community projects he highlighted were 'Hearing Dogs for the Deaf' and 'Prostate Cancer Charity'.

RI emphasises the need for co-operation with other clubs and organisations.

The session on International was led by Cathy Fox. It covered an update on Tsunami, the need for Clubs to return the feedback forms, the Project Library sheets, recycling projects. She plans to hold the half-yearly meeting in Sep 05. [12 May 05]

Tsunami Appeal / Collection story: At Luton Airport on Monday 2 Jan 05, the three Luton Clubs jointly raised over £4,000 and some foreign coins. They had tremendous co-operation from the airport staff, and two passengers on the way to France played violin to raise awareness. [Report and photos from Roger Munday, 6 Jan 05]. Addenda: The coins will be collected and converted into sterling free of charge by Travelex, arranged via Paul Denton.[7 Jan 05]

Tsunami in SE Asia struck on the Boxing day [26 Dec 2004]. There have been updates from RIBI / District on the main Dist 1260 home page. The machines of RI at the international level generally grind rather slowly at times of disaster. In the past, recommendations from the District for the Clubs who wish to help have been fairly well established. Please click on Disaster Notices link on the left-hand side. RIBI have also produced fact sheets on dealing with Disaster Response.

Broadly, it is to consider helping certain agencies like DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee) or the aid agencies such as Red Cross, Save the Children etc with cash as they can source what is required swiftly. In the medium term, it is to have on-going commitments to donating various boxes like Aquabox, Emergency Box, Shelter Box etc so that they can be despatched from a central place when there is a disaster. The only certainty is there are always disasters every year. Project sheets on Aquabox, Shoebox and Shelter box are on this site, under Project Info & Contacts. [Jan 05]

   Janet Peirce (the incoming Governor
for 2004-05)
Janet Peirce  set out her dreams at the District Assembly on 6 May 2004 to "Celebrate 100 years of Rotary". Click here for salient points of her speech concerning International services, especially Rotary's partnership with Hope and Homes for Hope Africa. Her messages included: "re-energise the clubs; focus on the good that money can do rather than how much; we are at our best when we are boldest; aim for the five 'make its' -  make it fun, make it accessible, make it so that weekly meetings are unmissable, make it a service organisation with a difference, and finally make it happen". [8 May 2004]

Missed the International session at the District Conference in Bournemouth? Not to worry - two of the themes were:
Recycling projects (not involving putting hands in your wallet) and some fun quiz to see how well you knew your committee members. Brian Dollier of Rickmansworth won the quiz competition. [May 04]

School-Aid is Inner Wheel's chosen charity this year. British Schools donate unwanted books and equipment which are then transported to Africa, courtesy of Capespan and Air Zimbabwe. Inner Wheel members have donated art and craft materials, as well as books, musical instruments and pre-school toys. These have a total value in excess of £10,000 so far.

With help from Inner Wheel, Rotary, Clancy/Docwra and other volunteers, the first shipment of the year was loaded into 36 pallets and into 40-ft lorry bound for Cape Town. Children in township schools near Cape Town and Johannesburg will soon benefit from their efforts. For a pictorial story, click here. School-Aid's website is www.school-aid.org
