Luton North

Started an International Fund to help rebuild the Gujarat area of India after the earthquake, resulting in very close co-operation with the local Rotary Club of Bhavnagar and the ultimate building of a new township which became named RotaryNagar, or "the Place of Rotary". This has now become an RIBI administered project. The opening of Rotary Nagar was attended by Club President Bob Shah, Project Leader Leslie Robertson, DG Mike Gardner and RIBI Pres. Norman Procter. Organised a Balloon Race where the winning balloon reached the eastern side of Russia. The money was transferred there and although small by western standards, has totally transformed the life of a small village. The winning Farmer has now bought a small Van with his prize and gone into the transport business. As a result, the villagers are now able to send their produce for sale in neighbouring towns and earn additional income.

The farmer has been able to "adopt" a 17-year old boy from the village who was without parents, and his family broken up after his mother was killed and his father sent to jail for manslaughter. Now the boy has a future and the prospect of an apprenticeship in his chosen trade. Largely made possible as a result of our Balloon Race.) Good contacts have been established with the Rotary Club of Nizhny Novgorod (formerly the Soviet city of Gorky) and have an invitation to visit them some time next year. The story of the Balloon Race and the Russian connection has been published on the Rotary1260 web site, the RIBI (April 2002) magazine, the RI Newsbasket, local newspapers, Anglia TV, the government web site of the Russian Republic of Mari-El, and last week was published again (with recent updates) in  the main Russian newspaper for Nizhny Novgorod.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Continued long-term sponsorship of an Indian boy attending training in a local Boys Town  (International Childrens' Trust administered)                                                                                                                Received a visit from our twinned club of Wolfsburg (Germany) in May 2002
