Rotary and Water Aid in Partnership.

 RIBI PRESIDENTS' PREFERRED INTERNATIONAL PROJECT

Tony de St. Dalmas
[Distributed to Dist 1260: 19 May 2002]

As President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland for the Rotary Year 2002/2003 it gives me great pleasure to share with all Rotarians the opportunity in partnership with WaterAid to 'Make a Difference' to a least 21,000 people living in Tanzania.  This is a special year, as not only, will WaterAid be celebrating their 21st Anniversary but also the world will be recognising the 'Year of Fresh Water'.

We are all aware of the benefits of safe and clean water resulting in a better quality of life, which we accept as the norm.  I hope that each Club will consider supporting this Special International Project and show that together for so little we can 'MAKE A DIFFERENCE' to the lives of so many.'   - Tony de St. Dalmas

Tanzania and in particular the Kiteto and Dodomo Districts were chosen as a special partnership for the Rotary Year 2002/2003 between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland because of the need in one of the poorest areas of the world combined with the fact that the country has enjoyed Political Stability since its formation in 1964.  A further incentive to work in Tanzania is that for every £ raised by Rotarians this will be matched by WaterAid enabling more communities to have access to safe and clean water.

It is expected that the joint programme with a budget of £155,000 will materially alter the lives of at least 21,000 people.

The work in the Kiteto District will include :-

·   Completion of five existing borehole projects.
·   Continuation on the focus on Gender, equality and livelihood issues in the implementation of the project work.
·   Undertake investigations and trials in the possibility of improving / utilising alternative sources in the villages of Ndedo

(a Pastoralist community with 4,004 members) and Amei (a Pastoralist settlement with a population of 758).
·   Continue to focus on good management at Village level.
·   To set up an effective pump engine maintenance scheme.

The Project will also be assisting other villages such as:

Matui - a mixed but mainly agricultural population of 18,049.
Songambele - a mainly agriculturalist village with 1,128 inhabitants.
Njoro - a mainly agriculturalist village with a population of 2,734.
Ndaleta - a mixed village with a population of 1,083.

The Dodomo region is classified by the Government as one of the four most vulnerable regions in Tanzania.

It is hoped that the work will commence in approximately 20 villages where there is no water supply and another 5 villages where there is need to improve the service levels (quantity or distance) and assist community led water supply, sanitation and hygiene projects.

The Project budget for the year 2002/2003 is £254,100 and for the year 2003/2004 £256,300.

Within the programme there will be different schemes and some of the cost of these are:

Surveying and Drilling one 150m deep 8" borehole        £  9,000

Capital costs of the pump and engine equipment            £21,800

                Shallow Well                                                                          £  1,900

                Hygiene and Sanitation promotion programme
for a Masaai Village with demonstration latrines               £ 2,000

I hope that all clubs in 1260 can give some support remembering that your contribution will be matched.
