Cyclone and its aftermath in Burma: Some tens of thousands have died and several hundreds of thousands have been made homeless, without clean water. Some areas have been cut off. The ruling Junta are just beginning to let Aid Agencies in.

There are no Rotary Clubs in Burma. As yet there is no news of any RIBI co-ordinated effort. Clubs who wish to contribute should consider, as usual in these circumstances, Rotary Box Schemes and International Aid Agencies listed under Disaster Notices page on this website - like Red Cross.

Red Cross have 15,000 volunteers in Burma. Rotary Shelter Box have been given permission to enter the country. 200 Shelter Boxes are on their way, with four people to help distribute them. About 1,000 more boxes are being prepared. [7 May 2008][Pictures from the BBC website]

Bangladesh has been hit by a cyclone. Various aid agencies are appealing for help. Apart from Rotary's own box schemes such as Shelter Box, Aquabox etc., Impact have a floating hospital in Bangladesh. Also, contact details of organisations including Disaster Emergency Committee are in the section under 'Disaster Notices' on this website. [Nov 2007]

Tsunami in SE Asia struck on the Boxing day [26 Dec 2004]. There have been updates from RIBI / District on the main Dist 1260 home page. The machines of RI at the international level generally grind rather slowly at times of disaster. In the past, recommendations from the District for the Clubs who wish to help have been fairly well established. RIBI have also produced fact sheets on dealing with Disaster Response.

Broadly, it is to consider helping certain agencies like DEC (Disaster Emergency Committee) or the aid agencies such as Red Cross, Save the Children etc with cash as they can source what is required swiftly. In the medium term, it is to have on-going commitments to donating various boxes like Aquabox, Emergency Box, Shelter Box etc so that they can be despatched from a central place when there is a disaster. The only certainty is there are always disasters every year. Project sheets on Aquabox, Shoebox and Shelter box are on this site, under Project Info & Contacts. [Jan 05]

Iain Young of RIBI gives an update on crisis in Sudan. So far, RIBI have probably raised the equivalent of £100,000. It is made up of £24,720 donation from 84 clubs, about £50,000 to Shelterbox and the remainder to various other box schemes and other aid organisations like British Red Cross and Disaster Emergency Committee. He thanks everyone for their efforts. Click here for full report.

  • Gujarat Update: Extracts from Tarak's e-mail: " I visited Morbi on  21st June, 2002 and had meeting with the short listed 39 beneficiaries. .. by end of the next week  we should have final list of all the 56 beneficiaries. .. the name of this township would be "ROTARYGRAM" (Gram in Hindi and Sanskrit means  "town"). I also visited another nearby site where a fertiliser manufacturing Govt. Corporation has developed and rehabilitated villagers of Sokhada. I liked some of the ideas because they have provided provisions to store rain water drained from the roof. Besides they have also installed solar street lights ( five nos) for trial.

Land acquisition process has been initiated and within this week the govt. engineer would come to do the plotting. Hence we are still within the schedule for Rotarynagar Phase II  ROTARYGRAM.

Lastly I have to share Good News with you all. Our Earthquake Rehabilitation Project has been selected for Best Public Relation Project Award by the R.I. Our IPP Dr. Muni has received the communication in this regard from our IPDG. [July 02]
