Rotary International District 1260 - International Services |
District Assembly - 4 May 2006
The special session on International Service was rather brief - as the main Assembly was unduly long.

Chairman of the International
Committee, Roy Lester (pictured on the left), welcomed the attendees and
introduced the committee members.
Milton Frary (Chairman of the Wheel Chair Foundation in the UK and Chairman of RIBI Foundation Committee) was also present to elaborate and answer any specific questions on one of the priority projects for this year - Wheel Chairs. |
Using visual aids, Roy highlighted the following:(click her for a copy of the nine page presentation)
How the district could
co-ordinate projects across clubs
How the committee are
organised to liaise with clubs, and be lead contacts for certain projects
How they can gather
information from clubs and publicise via a matrix the District's overall
achievements
Opportunities for service
split into two broad sections - one requiring mainly a 'service' element
(examples: collection of tools, drugs etc) and another requiring funds
(examples: Jaipur limbs, Wheel chair)
World community service
projects which are available on the Rotary International website for clubs
to pursue directly with other clubs elsewhere in the world. [ http://www.rotary.org/programs/wcs/index.html

The need to visit this website
(Dist. 1260 International Services) for up to date news and information.
Communication with the Clubs
will be via e-mail where possible.
Half-yearly meeting has been planned for 16 Nov 06 at Tilsworth.
Distribution of paperwork on projects was kept to the minimum as the information is now on this website (Project information and contacts) as well as on the RIBI website.
As regards some immediate action from the Clubs:
Achievements
Form: This is a two-page form listing what each club has done during the
Rotary year 2005-06. It should be completed by 1 July. This will enable the
committee to analyse and pull together information on the District's overall
achievements and let RIBI know.
Planning Form: Again, a two-page form listing what each club plans to achieve for the year 2005-07. It should be completed by 1 Aug.
Roy concluded by saying that the Committee members are there to assist them, and wished all the clubs a very successful year.
Some Notes on Wheel Chairs:
A wheel chair delivered to the
final destination costs only £50 to a club. Any additional costs for
transport etc are met by an American philanthropist, Kenneth Behring
(Chairman of Wheel Chair Foundation), and US Govt.
The chairs are manufactured in
China and sent directly to the destination in container loads.
There are five sizes of wheel
chairs.
There are 280 wheel chairs to
a container. At £50 each, it means £14,000 per container.
About 10,000 wheel chairs are
being despatched per month.
