Case Study - Rotary Works in International
Service
From an Idea to Completion in less than a
fortnight - Schools Project - Apr 2001
Background:
A neighbour of Jean and Peter Hawkins of the Welwyn Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs
told them about a school in Welwyn that was closing down and there were equipment, books
and furniture going to be scrapped
Peter contacted PDG Paul Denton and a message went out on the E group and as a result was
picked up by the District International Chairman Les Lee
What was done and How?
Les had connections with two organisations that were interested
Schoolaid based near Amersham supports and helps village schools in Zimbabwe and is
run by Lady Joy Baker.
Labaid based in Amersham collects renovates and sends science equipment to schools
in various parts of Africa. It is run by Alan Welch who also for many years has been
associated with the local Ranfurly Library Committee.
Both these organisations on occasion work with a third organisation in Amersham, Workaid
that refurbishes tools, typewriters and sewing machines also for Africa although they will
provide items to any developing country.
Lady Joy Baker quickly made contact with Jean Hawkins and visited the School where she was
amazed at the quality of the items available and wanted it all. However there were
limitations to transport and storage.
A message went out for help. The Welwyn and Hatfield Local Authority came up with a 7
Tonne lorry and were extremely helpful with access and loading. Peter Hawkins and Frank
Taylor co-ordinated help from the local Rotary clubs. Messages went out throughout the
district as arrangements were made to sort, pack and load as much |
